Aussies at Aachen - Exell wins seventh Crown

Boyd Exell

Boyd Exell has won his seventh consecutive Aachen title overnight in a very close battle where the final margin between first and second was less than a penalty.

In an event that gathered the world’s leading drivers it is a poignant victory for reigning world champion Exell, who is getting ready to defend his title at the 2014 FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG) which begin 34 days from now.

Exell was second in the dressage and finished 12th in the obstacle phase, putting him in second position overall and 7.12 penalties behind overall leader Chester Weber leading into Saturday’s marathon
.
Exell remained composed during the marathon to win the phase and with it the overall title for the seventh consecutive year. His final score of 133.63 was less than a penalty in front of US driver Chester Weber who scored 134.48. Dutch driver Koos de Ronde finished third with a score of 149.54.

Meantime Australia’s eventing team has finished in seventh position in the Aachen team’s event.

The team received the unwelcome news prior to cross country that Chris Burton and Graf liberty would be withdrawing due to the horse developing a virus.
“We are so proud of his work in the dressage and SJ and will be saving this lovely young horse for another day,” Burton said.

With Burton’s departure each of the remaining three combinations’ scores would be required and there were good performances from Paul Tapner and Kilronan which had 8.4 time penalties and Andrew Hoy and Rutherglen which had 7.2 time. A refusal at fence 15 proved costly to Kevin McNab and Clifton Pinot adding 40.4 penalties to their score. The final team score for Australia was 215.40 with Germany winning the event on a score of 129.0 after its riders occupied the top three individual placings.
