Hendra Vaccination and Biosecurity Policies Update

Equestrian Australia (EA) in consultation with the Hendra Working Group wishes to advise that it is in the final stage of formulating an Equestrian Australia National Hendra Biosecurity policy for the sport.

The policy is due for release on 1 July 2014 with an intended implementation date of 1 October 2014.

The policy will require organisers of all EA events to complete a questionnaire during the initial event planning stages to determine if their event requires classification as a Hendra Vaccinated Event. Events that are classified as a Hendra Vaccinated Event will be required to make Hendra vaccination a condition of entry.

The questionnaire will be called the Hendra Assessment Checklist and it will allow event organisers to self-assess the biosecurity risk of a Hendra outbreak at their event and determine the Hendra Vaccination classification of their event.

The onus and responsibility will be on horse owners and riders to ensure they comply with the event classification and follow the Equestrian Australia National Hendra Biosecurity policy on vaccination requirements.

Details of the policy and the Hendra Assessment Checklist as well as requirements for event organisers and horse owners will be announced on 1 July.
